What is the Contraceptive Pill?

  • Oral contraceptives are tablets that contain certain female hormones to stop a woman from getting pregnant. There are two main types of the contraceptive pill:

  • The combined oral contraceptive pill (COC) also simply “the pill” contains two hormones called oestrogen and progesterone. This is a very effective form of contraception that works in three ways:

  1. Stops you from producing an egg.
  2. Makes it harder for sperm to get into the womb.
  3. Thins the womb lining making egg-implantation less likely.
  4. When taking a combined pill, you usually take one pill and day for three weeks and then give your self a 7-day break when you will have a period.

  • The progesterone-only pill (POP) also known as the “mini-pill” contains only progesterone.  POPs work in two ways:

  1. Stops you from producing an egg.
  2. Makes it harder for sperm to get into the womb.
  3. If you use a mini-pill you will take one tablet a day without a break.

If you have been using the same oral contraceptive pill for at least a year, you can now get your repeat prescription directly from City Pharmacy in Leicester.

Why get my contraceptive pill from City Pharmacy?

  • Going direct to your pharmacy for your oral contraceptives gives you a number of benefits:
  1. GPs are busy: you’re likely to get an appointment more quickly at your pharmacist
  2. More convenient times for you: we open on Saturdays as well!
  3. Avoid the doctors waiting room: your GP is invariably running late

We conduct all our contraceptive appointments in our private consultation rooms at our  store in Leicester. There, you’ll have a brief consultation with the pharmacist who may check your blood pressure and ask you about your overall health.
